Winter Chores by Nancy Glazier
Published by Somerset House Publishing
As John Mcllhattan, D.V.M. bitches Billy and Bobby up to the old hay sled, he
follows in the footsteps of his father, his grandfather, and his great grandfather, and
his great grandfather who was the first to homestead this northern valley ... these very
sled runners were used by his father for 50 years of similar Winter Chores, and
they continue to carry a ton of hay every winter's day to the waiting livestock. The
patient John taught this pair of Belgians to pull a load, little by little, day by day,
until today, eight years later, the willing team know the whole routine by heart, and pull
with power and grace. Billy and Bobby wait for his low "ah-right," then they bit
the load together, popping the runners free with a bang, and they've off in clouds of
steam, the creaking of wood on iron, and the crunch and whir of flying snow to do the Winter
Chores. Johnny rides in back to give his dad a hand with the hay, and now we
see them near the end of the daily rounds, with the load very much lightened, and the team
is really moving out ! I have warm memories of riding behind these gentle giants, of
feeling the exhilaration, and the sharp fresh air numb my face, and marveled at the gentle
strength of this tall, kind man and his golden friends. - Nancy
